Downsview Park Station—Toronto Transit Commission
terrazzo, glazed ceramic, enameled metal panels, painted perforated ceiling panels, stainless steel
SPIN locates five gestural brushstroke rings around a central point Toronto’s Downsview Park Subway Station. Developed in a virtual model, the view of each ring was captured from a particular location and rendered in the architectural finishes so that, from that specific location, one can glimpse the ring’s continuity and alignment—a moment that allows the ring to lift away from the architecture and enjoy centre stage. Elsewhere the rings shift, transform, and mutate, taking on very different personalities. The scale of the rings become smaller as one descends to the platform level, where the virtual centre of all five rings can be found. Here viewers can find a free-floating stainless-steel sphere that can be spun.
