Anniversary Exhibition

mixed media installation

Decalog was an exhibition conceived of, researched, and constructed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of YYZ Artists’ Outlet, a Toronto artist-run centre. To research the history of the centre, Clark Espinal referred only to the documentation which had been archived by gallery staff. In so doing, it was assumed that misinterpretations and misrepresentations of the history would occur and that the artist’s personal biases would play an integral role in what was displayed. These assumptions became an important conceptual component for the exhibition.

Gaps, misinterpretations and inaccuracies have undoubtedly resulted from this filtration process. These are, however, inescapable aspects of the constructed nature of history. Panya Clark Espinal
