Building Colour, 2017
Public Art in seven stations of the Mississauga MiWay Dedicated Bus Line
Vanceva architectural glass, cast and fabricated bronze objects, touch sensitive lighting systems (controlled through some of the bronze objects), RGB LED lighting.
Building Colour prompts the viewer to imagine that a crew of unseen workers are changing the stations’ clear colourless glazing to brightly coloured glass. Although the work crew is not currently on site, we see evidence of their presence in the form of tools, tool belts, hardhats, thermoses, lunch containers, paint cans, and other personal effects. Crates, carrying the new sheets of glass, are open at platform and racks and dollies are being employed to move the glass to location. Through translucent storeroom windows we see evidence of a variety of glass panels awaiting installation. By touching the bronze objects adjacent to the storerooms, we can change the colour of light being emitted, allowing us, as citizens, to influence the colours that are present in this public realm.
Building Colour encourages viewers to consider the capacity of city infrastructure to enliven our experiences. It acknowledges the role of all citizens in making our cities “colourful” and endeavours to empower them to play a part in doing so.
